Vehicles are the largest category in government surplus auctions. The federal government alone maintains a fleet of over 650,000 vehicles, and GSA Fleet Sales rotates 30,000-40,000 of them annually. State and local agencies sell through GovDeals, which handles the majority of municipal fleet disposals – retired police cruisers, public works trucks, and administrative sedans. Most government vehicles are well-maintained under mandatory service schedules but have above-average mileage from daily agency use.
The most common are fleet sedans (Ford Taurus, Chevy Impala), pickup trucks (F-150, Ram 1500), and SUVs (Explorer, Tahoe). You'll also find specialty vehicles like ambulances, fire trucks, transit buses, and military HMMWVs. Motorcycles, boats, and aircraft appear less frequently.
Government fleet vehicles are serviced on strict schedules, so mechanical condition is typically good. The trade-off is higher mileage – a 3-year-old sedan might have 80,000-100,000 miles. Cosmetically, they range from clean to rough depending on the agency. Titles are clean (no salvage or flood history).
It depends on the platform. GSA Fleet Sales charges no buyer's premium. GovDeals typically charges 12.5%. GovPlanet charges 10%. Always check the auction terms before bidding, because the premium can significantly affect the total cost.
VINs are listed on most vehicle auctions, so you can run your own Carfax or AutoCheck report. Some platforms (GSA Fleet, GovDeals) include mileage and maintenance notes in the listing. For older or specialty vehicles, contacting the selling agency directly for service records is worthwhile.
